Stephen Ring is a North Devon coastal artist and contemporary seascape painter, creating striking resin artworks inspired by the dramatic UK coastline. Working from his studio near the sea, his paintings capture the movement, light and atmosphere of the ocean in a distinctive semi-abstract style.

With over two decades of experience as both a professional photographer and artist, Stephen draws on an exceptional understanding of natural light, colour and weather patterns. His work is deeply rooted in the landscapes of Exmoor, the North Devon coast, and the Atlantic Ocean, and is widely collected for its ability to bring a sense of depth, energy and calm into interior spaces.

Stephen began his artistic career painting and selling his work along the railings of Hyde Park in London, before relocating to Devon, where his connection to the coastline became central to his creative identity.

From Landscape Photography to Ocean-Inspired Art

With a long-established career in landscape and coastal photography, Stephen has developed a deep understanding of natural light, colour and weather patterns. This foundation informs his painting process, enabling him to translate real coastal locations into expressive and immersive artworks.

His work has been widely published and commissioned, with clients including P&O Cruises, BAA, and the NHS. Over 1,800 of his photographic images have been displayed aboard the P&O cruise ship Ventura. This level of professional recognition underpins the quality and credibility of his fine art practice.

Signature Resin Seascape Technique

Stephen is best known for his resin and mixed media seascape paintings, created using aluminium and wooden panels, carefully prepared with multiple layers of gesso. He works with acrylic inks, alcohol inks, resin, and metallic pigments, including gold, silver, and copper, building each piece in layers to achieve depth, luminosity, and fluid motion.

His technique removes hard lines, allowing the composition to flow organically, echoing the rhythm of tide. The final high-gloss resin finish enhances light and reflection, allowing each artwork to shift and evolve with the light and viewing angle, revealing new depth and detail throughout the day.
