Dale Bowen

Dale Bowen – British Coastal and Maritime Artist
Dale Bowen is a British coastal and maritime artist who lives and paints from his studio in Dorset. Working predominantly in oils and mixed media, he creates richly textured original paintings filled with atmosphere, movement and character. His work ranges from weathered harbour towns and quiet coastal settlements to vibrant paintings of racing yachts at sea.
From Master Potter to Painter
Born in Staffordshire in 1963, Dale developed an interest in painting from an early age and went on to study art at Newcastle-under-Lyme College.
Before establishing himself as a painter, Dale enjoyed a distinguished career as a master potter. He worked first for Coalport China and then spent 15 years with Wedgwood, creating highly decorated one-off pieces and important commissions within Wedgwood’s Prestige Department. He later gained a master’s degree in ceramics from Staffordshire University.
Important Commissions & International Recognition
Dale’s ceramic commissions included pieces created for Coalport’s 250th anniversary, the Queen Mother’s 100th birthday celebrations and the bicentenary of the Battle of Trafalgar. He also created a commemorative plaque presented to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II aboard HMS Victory.
His work has been exhibited internationally, including private exhibitions in New York, Washington and San Francisco, together with an exclusive Masterpiece Collection in Japan. Examples of his ceramic work have also been exhibited in museums in the UK, USA and Japan.
Coastal & Sailing Paintings
Dale works with a variety of materials and techniques, building layers of colour and texture to give his paintings their distinctive tactile quality. Inspiration may begin with a photograph, a simple sketch, an observation or even a conversation, allowing each composition to develop naturally through the creative process.
His atmospheric Salt & Stone collection celebrates the timeworn character of harbour communities, fishing boats and coastal villages. Alongside these quieter scenes, Dale’s colourful sailing paintings capture the exhilaration of open water through closely gathered yachts, sweeping sails and energetic seas.
In Dale’s Words
“It is always the joy of painting that is my first love and keeps me returning to canvas.” – Dale Bowen
