Artist Statement
It has been said that my practice dances between art, craft and design. Folding origami for months I create a harmony of colour to use like a palette of paint in the creation of a piece. Using ‘washi’ Japanese origami paper known for its durability and preservative qualities (even used by Rembrandt), I write my own poetry that surrounds some of the origami artwork and produce commission pieces for unique gifts celebrating special occasions. As well as box framed origami artwork I create origami installations, sculptures, jewellery, and give workshops. Known to symbolize peace, love and longevity, legend states that the person who folds one thousand origami cranes will be granted their wish. Sadako Sasaki folded and wrote I will write peace on your wings and you will fly all over the world. The children of Japan continue this tradition as ‘messengers of peace’ and Sasakis statue can be found in the Hiroshima Peace Park: ‘This is my cry. This is my prayer. Peace in the world’. I learnt this whilst teaching in Japan and I continue this tradition in my work, raising money for charity where possible and bringing groups together through workshops in the arts and crafts. Butterflies symbolize hope!!
I have been lucky to create many personal commissions for the home throughout the UK and abroad, exhibit in galleries and create large artwork for corporate offices in London. I have worked as an expert teaching and exhibiting at The Handmade Fair, Hampton Court Palace, and have had the opportunity to work with ECI Agency, San Francisco, USA, to present my work to Apple Computers and MUFG Bank for their Cupertino Offices. Advertising and TV work has been with ‘Webber Represents’ and ‘Saatchi & Saatchi’ on a worldwide advertising campaign for HSBC using my origami butterflies. I have also taught origami while being interviewed live by Gaby Roslin about The Mindfulness Art of Origami on The Saturday Show, Channel 5.
