Contemporary Ocean-Inspired Original Paintings

Ben Lucas creates contemporary ocean-inspired original paintings that explore light, movement, atmosphere and the emotional pull of the sea. The ocean has always captivated Ben: its shifting moods, the way light moves across its surface, and the fleeting moments of beauty it offers.

Painting the Emotional Pull of the Ocean

Ben’s paintings emerge from memory and lived experience, capturing a sense of movement, energy and transcendence, while leaving space for the viewer’s own emotional response.

Rather than depicting specific places, his work aims to evoke a sense of atmosphere. The ocean and sky become metaphors for the breadth of human experience, reflecting both inner turbulence and moments of stillness and clarity.

Process & Intuition

Ben's process is guided by intuition and an emotional response to the landscape. Each painting moves between controlled, deliberate passages and freer, more spontaneous marks, led by the resonance of the moment.

Through a process of distillation, Ben pares each work back to what feels essential, allowing the paint to speak with immediacy and energy, inviting fresh interpretations to unfold.

Ben Lucas has exhibited widely in the UK and Australia, with a strong history of solo and group exhibitions. His work has also been shown at major international art fairs, including Battersea Affordable Art Fair and Singapore Affordable Art Fair.

Ben also comes from a remarkable, creative family. He is the grandson of author Mary Norton, best known for The Borrowers, and the grandson of pioneering modernist architect Colin Lucas OBE, who was connected with Unit One, the British modernist group founded by Paul Nash.

His wider family also includes portrait painter Fanny Rush and sculptor Joe Rush, founder of the Mutoid Waste Company.
